All of Akelo's sculptural works are made using industrial steel waste* as their raw material. Thus it begins a new life, being transformed into long-lasting works of art, according to the principles of upcycling.
This practice involves the use of waste materials which, once their life cycle is over, are transformed into new objects with a new function and added value.
Upcycling is quite different to simple recycling; in addition to creating value, it combats the single-use culture, makes it possible to contain energy consumption by reducing raw material and production costs, and thus becoming a virtuous example of the supply chain within a circular economy.
*For every tonne of steel recovered, 2.16 tonnes of CO2 are saved, with obvious benefits for both people and the environment.
